213 for JB Makes it a Ford Record

Staff, Wednesday March 21, 2007.

Ford driver John Bowe will break the record for the most number of Australian Touring Car / V8 Supercar Championship starts when he gets behind the wheel this weekend for the 213th time, claiming the title long-held by late Holden driver Peter Brock.

Driving his retirement year with Paul Cruickshank Racing (PCR) in the #111 Glenfords Falcon, Bowe will embark on his history making drive at Barbagallo Raceway in WA for round two of the 2007 Championship series.

“This has been an incredible start to the season for me – I’ve joined a great new team at PCR, set records, announced my retirement… and we’ve only done one round!!,” said John Bowe.

“It’s been a little overwhelming, to be honest. I’m extremely surprised and flattered and by the fantastic response I’ve had from the fans.

“In round one in Adelaide, I was fortunate enough to equal Peter Brock’s record of 212 Australian Touring Car / V8 Supercar Championship starts.”

“This weekend, I will take the record outright and I’m very pleased that a significant milestone like this is now firmly in Ford land.”

“I’ve enjoyed 28 years of racing in WA; I claimed my first Touring Car pole position at Wanneroo in 1986 and had two wins with DJR… It’s hard for me to really grasp that this is my last V8 Supercar event on the West Coast.”

Breaking the record is a significant benchmark for Bowe, who has won 15 races for Ford throughout his career.

“JB breaking the record for the most starts in a V8 Supercar is great from a Ford perspective,” said Ray Price, Ford Racing Manager.

“He has been involved in motor racing for a long period of time and has always been a fantastic ambassador for Ford.”

“It is a fantastic achievement for JB personally, as it highlights his commitment to the sport and his solid experience which he now brings to his new team PCR.”

Another positive for Ford heading into round two is Ford Performance Racing (FPR) driver Steven Richards’ chance for a hat-trick, having taken out the Barbagallo event the past two years running.

“Barbagallo Raceway has been a very happy hunting ground for me. The way that we have set up the FPR Falcons should suit this circuit well, so I am in with a very good shot to take a hat trick of wins,” said Steven Richards.

“I enjoy racing at Barbagallo, but it is never all about the driver – it is really about making the car right.”

“While I have been successful at this circuit in the past, I’m not a big believer in fairy tales and it will take a great team effort to grab a win or podium this weekend.”

Richards drives alongside Mark Winterbottom who was third in last year’s Championship. With FPR’s BF Falcon’s performing strongly the team expects top results this weekend.

“It’s great to have Steven back in the Ford camp,” said Ray Price.

“As he adapts to his new team environment and a different car, we expect to see him post some very good times and become extremely competitive.”

“He knows the Perth circuit well and we hope the success he has had there in the past continues. Maybe he can take out the round for Ford this weekend.”

The Falcon BF’s set the pace at Clipsal with Stone Brothers Racing’s James Courtney on pole, repeatedly resetting the fastest lap and coming in third for the round.

“The BF is performing as we expected, with a lot more balance. The drivers are experiencing that improvement and the increased speed was evident in the lap times,” said Ray Price

“James was certainly the fastest on track at Clipsal. He has a full season under his belt now and it’s great to see that Stone Brothers are improving on last year.”

Ford’s line-up of V8 Supercar teams and drivers will hit the track this weekend at Barbagallo Raceway in Perth, 23 – 25 March.
