Ford to Continue V8 Championship Fight in Tasmania

Staff, Thursday November 15, 2007.

Ford’s winning crop of V8 Supercar drivers will attack the second last event on the 2007 V8 Supercar calendar this weekend in Tasmania with the Championship win and manufacturer’s title firmly in their sights.

Fresh from a Ford one, two, three, four finish in Bahrain which saw the V8 driver with the most pole positions for the season (four) Mark Winterbottom take out the round and climb to fifth in the overall standings, there are a number of Falcon’s poised to clench the win at Symmons Plains.

The Bahrain all-Ford podium result was reminiscent of the Ford clean-sweep at Bathurst which boasted seven Falcons in the top ten, the same number that currently dominate the Championship ten. Just 34 points separate the top four V8 Supercar drivers heading into round thirteen including Craig Lowndes in the #888 Falcon and Jamie Whincup in #88. With 144 points still up for grabs this season the fight for victory is very much alive.

Lowndes is a mere 20 points from the Championship lead going into the penultimate round on the fast 2.4 kilometre circuit that provides a lap of just 50 seconds – the place where he took pole and three race victories during his debut V8 Supercar season in 1996.

Whincup sits nine points back in third position and is hungry to reclaim some much-missed points plus his Championship lead, and no doubt itching to take the win this weekend ahead of Garth Tander who has won in Tasmania the past two years.

Stone Brothers Racing is firmly in-line for further podiums having secured three in as many rounds with Courtney third at Bathurst, Ingall and Courtney both second at Indy and Bahrain respectively.

"Ford has its sights firmly set on the Championship. What we are seeing time and time again is a number of different Ford teams and drivers winning races," said Ford Racing Manager Ray Price.

"There are seven Ford’s currently in the top ten and with the ever improving performance of our teams we believe there’s no reason we won’t take out the win this weekend and at the season’s end."

"Mark Winterbottom is undeniably fast and with four pole positions under his belt this season, luck finally went his way giving him the deserved round win in Bahrain."

"Jamie Whincup has been a solid force on track and unfortunately lost some ground at the last two events, however he is still very much in the game in third position with a fast car underneath him."

"Lowndes is heavily in the fight and can only get stronger, he’s continually able to produce winning results and we’ve just seen that in him coming back to a win in race three at Bahrain after an undesirable start. "

"James Courtney and Steven Johnson are two other standouts of late both producing some remarkable and consistent race results."

Team Kiwi Racing’s Shane Van Gisburgen heads to the circuit as a rookie and will steer the #021 Falcon. Although it is Alan Gurr’s first V8 Supercar season he raced a Ford Mondeo Super Tourer on the track in 2001.

Jason Bright will this weekend celebrate the tenth anniversary of his debut in the V8 Supercar Championship series having started his campaign at Symmons Plains in 1997. As runner up at the event last year he is looking to reverse his string of bad luck this season and return to form with a solid round result.

Retiring V8 Supercar veteran John Bowe will be honoured for a lifetime of achievement and success in motorsport at his home event in Tasmania. He began his career at Symmons Plains in Formula Vee then Formula Ford winning both Championships on debut in 1971.

Ford’s talented line-up of drivers will attack the second last event on the 2007 V8 Supercar calendar this weekend across three 50 lap races for round thirteen in Tasmania (16-18 November).
