Ford’s V8 Supercar talent will rev their engines in Sydney this weekend, with Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup among the hot favourites to battle the Holdens, particularly if the forecasted rain prevails.
Lowndes heads into round five of the V8 Supercar Championship at Eastern Creek Raceway with confidence thanks to a pole and outright win at the track when the series last visited in 2005.
The Ford frontrunner won a battle with the Blue Oval’s current Nascar superstar Marcos Ambrose, (leaving Holden rival Rick Kelly back in 22nd) to take out the round on the very same circuit that saw him claim victory at his V8 debut in 1996.
Experience on the 3.93 kilometre track teamed with the fire to climb his way through the Championship standings, Lowndes and his #888 Falcon backed by Triple 8 expertise, are set to be a podium threat.
Team-mate Whincup attacks the round confidently, with the knowledge of Triple 8’s past success Eastern Creek, and the desire to back-up his round four win in the wet at Winton last month.
Currently third in the Championship, the 24-year-old has a penchant for racing in wet conditions. The predicted weekend rain adds to the positive mix of elements indicating another potential win in the #88 BF Falcon.
“We cinched the return to form we were looking for at Winton, and we won’t be giving up that top step of the podium too easily,” said Ford Racing Manager, Ray Price.
“We have a number of teams and drivers that are well-positioned to secure pole and race wins. We currently have six individuals in the top ten and our talent spreads throughout the entire Ford field.”
“Jamie Whincup has been doing an excellent job, he’s third in the Championship and no doubt hungry for further success.”
“And the fact that Craig Lowndes has a victorious history at Eastern Creek will only add to the likelihood of Triple 8 triumph this weekend.”
“Some of their biggest rivals on the track will be from the Ford camp – we have ample talent and increasing pace and I have no doubt we’ll see that convert into continued race wins.”
The V8 Supercars are scheduled to race over a long weekend for first time in the sport’s history, hitting the track from 9 ? 11 June.
Consisting of three 31-lap races, the competition kicks off on Sunday with qualifying and race one, followed by two races to be held for the first time on a Monday.
Ford will also feature in support categories such as the V8 Utes and Formula Ford which run throughout the event.
Ford currently dominates the V8 Supercar Championship standings quantity-wise with six drivers in the top ten. The likes of James Courtney, Steven Johnson, Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison are squarely on the Championship chase.
